Abstract

cushion assembly for a patient interface includes an elastomeric seal-forming portion with a central opening. The surface (3105) of the seal forming portion is tackier in an inferior region (3198B) where the mask engages the chin of a patient and relatively less tacky in a superior region (3198A) where the mask engages the nasal bridge of a patient. The surface transitions between the nasal bridge and chin regions. In one embodiment the less tacky region is formed by a frosted surface that reduces friction around the nose.

Claims (11)

1. A cushion assembly for a patient interface for sealed delivery of a flow of air at a continuously positive pressure with respect to ambient air pressure to an entrance to a patient's airways including at least entrance of the patient's nares, wherein the patient interface is configured to maintain a therapy pressure in a range of about 4 cmH20 to about 30 cmH20 above ambient air pressure in use, throughout the patient's respiratory cycle, while the patient is sleeping, to ameliorate sleep disordered breathing, the cushion assembly comprising: an elastomeric seal-forming portion with a central opening, the elastomeric seal- forming portion comprising: a nasal bridge region configured to engage the patient’s nasal bridge; an inferior region on an opposite side of the central opening from the nasal bridge region, a first support region located on a first lateral side of the central opening between the inferior region and the nasal bridge region; and a second support region located on a second lateral side of the central opening that is opposite the first support region between the inferior region and the nasal bridge region, wherein a part of the exterior surface of the elastomeric seal-forming portion in the inferior region is tackier than a part of the exterior surface of the elastomeric seal- forming portion in the nasal bridge region, and wherein a transition from the relatively tackier part of the exterior surface of the elastomeric seal-forming portion to the relatively less tacky part of the exterior surface is located in the first and second support regions.
2. The cushion assembly of claim 1, wherein a wall thickness of the elastomeric seal-forming portion in the nasal bridge and inferior regions is less than a wall thickness of the elastomeric seal-forming portion in the first and second support regions.

The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 2, wherein the transition from the relatively tackier part of the exterior surface of the elastomeric seal-forming portion to the relatively less tacky part of the exterior surface of the elastomeric seal-forming portion extends to the central opening of the elastomeric seal-forming portion.
4. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the transition between the relatively tackier part of the elastomeric seal-forming portion to the relatively less tacky part of the elastomeric seal-forming portion is a laterally extending line.
5. The cushion assembly of claim 4, wherein the tackiness of the elastomeric seal- forming portion on a superior side of the transition line is less than the tackiness of the elastomeric seal-forming portion on an inferior side of the transition line.
6. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the exterior surface in the superior region is frosted and the exterior surface in the inferior region is not frosted.
7. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein a transition from the relatively tackier part of the exterior surface of the elastomeric seal-forming portion to the relatively less tacky part of the exterior surface is located in a part of the elastomeric seal-forming portion with the greatest wall thickness.

10. A patient interface assembly comprising: the cushion assembly of any one of clams 1 to 9; a rigid shell removably connected to the cushion assembly; and headgear removably attached to the rigid shell.
11. A CPAP system comprising: the patient interface assembly according to claim 10; a flow generator configured to pressurize a flow of gas; and an air delivery tube configured to deliver the pressurized gas to the patient interface assembly.
