Abstract

The fastener includes a head, a shank, and a helical thread formation. The helical thread formation is formed with a plurality of grooves that are respectively each partially defined by a straight cutting edge. The third portion of the fastener is tapered. The tapered third portion of the fastener increases in diameter in the direction of head to tip. The tapering on the third portion of the shank reduces the localized frictional torques applied to the third portion of the shank due to the decreased diameter of the thread formation having less contact surface with a substrate into which the fastener is driven. These improvements reduce torsional failure of the fastener from over tightening.
