Abstract

Latches, sliding. - A spring-actuated sliding latch 1 is formed from a sheet metal strip bent over at the ends to form the head 2 and having a helical spring 5 engaging a tongue 9 at the back of the head and a fixed tongue in the casing. The rear end of the latch is bifurcated, with flanges 7 for engaging the follower 15 secured to the handle 14, the shank 6 of which turns in a stamped up bearing 13 in the base plate 4. A metal plate 12 fitting over the bearing 13 and secured to the base plate 4 has a flange 11 with a tongue 10 serving to secure the other end of the spring 5. The flange 7 may be undercut so that the projection 17 of the follower engages recesses therein to form a steadying means for the bolt. Wings 16 on the bolt limit its outward movement, and the lugs of the bolt straddling the shank 6 limit its inward movement. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the bolt is bent as shown and guided by parallel walls of the casing 4 and lugs 18. A pin 21 rigidly secured to the tapped lug 11 on the casing and working in a slot in the turned-down lug 8 of the sides 20 of the bolt, carries the spring 5. The bolt is operated by the follower 15 acting on the lugs 7.
