Abstract
The raised formations (3) of paving, particularly for the provision of guide and boundary lines for use by the visually handicapped, are provided, at least in part, with surface profiles (4) with an anti-slip function. The formations (3) and profiles (4) may be formed integrally with the base layer (2) from rubber or a plastics material. <IMAGE>
Description
PAVING WITH RAISED FORMATIONS
The present invention relates to pavings with raised formations intended for use in pedestrian areas and public places such as railway stations, underground stations, pavements, etc.
Interesting developments based on the possibility of forming zones in which the raised formations are higher than the formations of the adjacent areas of the paving have for some time been taking place in the use of these pavings, which are currently known as "studded" pavings. Since the visually handicapped can also detect the presence of these zones, they may be used, for example, to form guide lines or boundary lines for hazardous areas.
By way of example, the raised formations in these zones may have a height of one centimeter or slightly less and an overall appearance which can be compared more or less to the vertex of an egg.
Current installations have made it possible, however, to observe that layers of slippery material may form on the surface of these formations, with the potential risk that people walking on the paving may fall over.
The present invention is designed to provide a paving with raised formations whose application and use does not entail the drawbacks described above.
In accordance with the present invention, this object is achieved by means of paving of the above-described type, wherein the raised formations are provided, at least in part, with surface profiles with an anti-slip function, such as ribs, grooves, etc.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention are shown in the following description, given purely by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the paving of the invention, and
Figure 2 is a section along the line II-II of Figure 1.
In the drawings, paving of rubber or synthetic material of the type known currently as "studded" paving is designated by 1. The paving is substantially formed by a flat web 2 forming the base of the paving, on which raised formations 3 of an approximately conical shape with a rounded vertex (similar to the vertex of an egg) are uniformly distributed and project appreciably from the web layer.2.
The term "appreciably" has been used to indicate that in the paving of the invention (intended - on the basis of the criteria discussed above - to be used for the provision of guide lines and boundaries for hazardous areas in pedestrian areas, public places, etc., for use by the visually handicapped) the formations 3 project approximately one centimeter or slightly less from the web 2. This is in contrast to the studded pavings which are most widely used nowadays, in which the formations 3 have an overall flat shape and project by a few millimeters from the web 2.
The main characteristic feature of the paving of the invention lies in that the formations 3, produced by moulding or stamping from a single mass of rubber or plastic material together with the web 2, are provided with surface profiles 4 such as ribs, grooves or roughened areas whose function is to prevent the paving 1 from becoming slippery if water, oil or other soiling agents are deposited on the paving.
In the embodiment illustrated, the profiles 4 have the appearance of discontinuous circular ribs disposed on the outer surface of the raised formations 3 so as to form rings whose diameter gradually decreases towards the vertex of the formations 3.
The present invention obviously also covers models of similar utility using the same inventive concept.
Claims (4)
1. Paving with raised formations, particularly for the provision of guide lines and boundary lines for use by the visually handicapped, wherein the raised formations are provided, at least in part, with surface profiles with an anti-slip function.
2. Paving as claimed in claim 1, wherein the raised formations are approximately conical in shape and the surface profiles take the form of annular ribs forming rings whose diameter gradually decreases towards the vertex of the raised formation.
3. Paving as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the paving comprises a web layer from which the raised formations project and the web layer and raised formations are formed from a single mass of rubber or plastic material.
4. Paving with raised formations, substantially as hereinbefore described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
