Abstract
A syringe 1 for discharging liquid 18 comprises a barrel 2 having at one end 3 an outlet 4 through which liquid 18 in the barrel 2 can be discharged, a piston 9 provided as a sliding fit in the other end 5 of the barrel 2, and a plunger 16. The plunger 16 is adapted to push the piston 9 along the barrel 2 towards said one end 3 of the barrel 2 to discharge said liquid 18 but without coupling with the piston 9 so that the piston 9 cannot be withdrawn by the plunger 16. The piston may be releasably locked at the other end 5 of the barrel and a sealing outer sleeve 13 may be provided so that the syringe may be prefilled with liquid. <IMAGE>
Description
SYRINGE
This invention relates to a syringe, particularly to a disposable syringe which can be used, for example, for hypodermic injections.
Although disposable syringes are known, there remains a need for an easily and cheaply manufactured syringe with features of convenience and safety.
According to the present invention, there is provided a syringe for discharging liquid, which syringe comprises a barrel having at one end an outlet through which liquid in the barrel can be discharged, a piston provided as a sliding fit in the other end of the barrel, and a plunger which is adapted to push the piston along the barrel towards said one end of the barrel to discharge said liquid but without coupling with the piston so that the piston cannot be withdrawn by the plunger.
Preferably, the syringe further comprises locking means for releasably locking the piston at said other end of the barrel.
In a preferred embodiment, said locking means comprises bayonet-fitting or twist-locking means.
It is preferred that complementary formations are provided between the piston and the plunger for releasable engagement to enable the plunger to rotate the piston in order to release said locking means.
Preferably, the syringe further comprises sealing means which is provided externally of the barrel for releasably sealing the outlet.
More preferably, the syringe further comprises a protective outer sleeve for receiving substantially the whole of the barrel, said sealing means being supported by the sleeve.
It is preferred that holding means is provided between the barrel and the sleeve for engagement to hold the barrel in the sleeve.
Preferably, the barrel has at said other end a finger abutment member against which force can be exerted on the plunge to push the piston.
It is preferred that the syringe further comprises fixina means for fixing a hypodermic needle at said one end of the barrel.
In another preferred embodiment, the syringe is pre-filled with liquid in the barrel.
An embodiment of a syringe according to the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of an embodiment of a syringe according to the invention, in a storage condition;
Figure 2 is a sectional side view of the syringe of
Figure 1, in a post-operating condition;
Figures 3A to 3C show one side and both ends of the syringe of Figure 1, respectively;

Referring to the drawings, a syringe 1 comprises a plastics barrel 2. The barrel 2 is rounded at one end 3 and is provided at that end 3 with four discharge outlet apertures 4. Provided at the other end 5 of the barrel 2 is a finger abutment member 6.
The member 6 includes an inner pair of bayonet fittings 7 adapted to lie within barrel 2 and an outer pair of bayonet fittings 8 adapted to lie outside barrel 2.
A generally cylindrical piston 9 is located as a sliding fit within the end 5 of the barrel 2. A pair of bayonet fittings 10 cooperate with bayonet fittings 7 of the finger abutment member 6 to lock the piston in the position shown in Figure 1. The piston 9 includes at its inner end a silicone rubber seal 11, and is provided at its outer end with four recesses 12.
A protective outer sleeve 13, possessing at one end a pair of bayonet fittings 14, is releasably secured to the barrel 2 by engagement of the bayonet fittings 14 with bayonet fittings 8 of member 6. The sleeve 13 carries a silicone rubber seal 15 for sealing against the rounded end 3 of barrel 2.
A plunger 16 is adapted to be received within barrel 2 and is provided at the inner end with four pegs 17 to engage with corresponding recesses 12 in the outer end of piston 9, whereby piston 9 can be rotated to disengage bayonet fittings 7 and 10.
The barrel 2 is filled with a liquid 18, in that the bayonet fittings 7 and 10 engage with each other to fix the piston 9 in position so as to retain the liquid 18 in the barrel 2.
In use, the sleeve 13 is first of all removed from the barrel 2 to expose the rounded end 3 and in particular the outlet apertures 4 by relative rotation between the sleeve 13 and barrel 2 to disengage bayonet fittings 14 and 8. Thereafter plunger 16 is engaged with the piston 9 and rotated to disengage bayonet fittings 7 and 10.
Subsequently, liquid 18 is discharged via outlets apertures 4 by driving plunger 16 which in turn pushes the piston 9 along the barrel towards the rounded end 3. Because the plunger 16 and piston 9 are not coupled or actively engaged together, it is practically impossible to retract piston 9 to its original position for re-use after it has reached the end of its stroke as shown in Figure 2.
The non-return piston operation prevents the syringe 1 from being refilled with injection liquids or medicines which are vulnerable to contamination, particularly when handled by a non-expert user.
Also, the fact that the piston 9 cannot be withdrawn at all eliminates any possibility of air entering into the barrel 2 by suction, which would otherwise be hazardous to the user.
It is to be understood that the invention may be performed otherwise than as has been particularly described. The invention includes within its scope all changes and modifications which would be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Claims (11)
1. A syringe for discharging liquid, which syringe comprises a barrel having at one end an outlet through which liquid in the barrel can be discharged, a piston provided as a sliding fit in the other end of the barrel, and a plunger which is adapted to push the piston along the barrel towards said one end of the barrel to discharge said liquid but without coupling with the piston so that the piston cannot be withdrawn by the plunger.
2. A syringe as claimed in claim 1, further comprising locking means for releasably locking the piston at said other end of the barrel.
3. A syringe as claimed in claim 2, wherein said locking means comprises bayonet-fitting or twistlocking means.
4. A syringe as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein complementary formations are provided between the piston and the plunger for releasable engagement to enable the plunger to rotate the piston in order to release said locking means.
5. A syringe as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising sealing means which is provided externally of the barrel for releasably sealing the outlet.
6. A syringe as claimed in claim 5, further comprising a protective outer sleeve for receiving substantially the whole of the barrel, said sealing means being supported by the sleeve.
7. A syringe as claimed in claim 6, wherein holding means is provided between the barrel and the sleeve for engagement to hold the barrel in the sleeve.
8. A syringe as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the barrel has at said other end a finger abutment member against which force can be exerted on the plunge to push the piston.
9. A syringe as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising fixing means for fixing a hypodermic needle at said one end of the barrel.
10. A syringe as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, said syringe being pre-filled with liquid in the barrel.
11. A syringe substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
