また、図4(a)、(b)に示すように、セパレータ露出部11の高さbが1.0mm未満であると、十分に第1電極9のかみこみを防止できないおそれがあり、第1電極9の高さL2の20%より大きくすると、第1電極9の活物質量が減少して電池容量を低下させるとともに、第1電極9の強度が低下して、第1電極9が破断してしまうおそれがある。よって、上記範囲に規制することが好ましい。
以下に、本発明電池をリチウムイオン二次電池に適用した場合について、図面を用いながら説明する。
図1に示すように、本発明に係るリチウムイオン二次電池は、フィルム状外装体の一例であるアルミニウムラミネート材を用いたアルミニウムラミネート外装体3を有している。このアルミニウムラミネート外装体3は、図1に示すように、フィルムが折り返されてなる底部と、電極タブが突出した状態で開口部を封止するタブ突出封止部4aと、サイド封止部4b・4cとを有する構造である。そして、前記底部と3方の封止部4a・4b・4cで囲まれた本体部分の内側に収納空間2が形成されており(図2参照)、この収納空間2内に、扁平形電極体1と、非水電解液が収納されている。
なお、本発明の適用はこの構造のアルミニウムラミネート材を用いた外装体に限定されるものではない。
コバルト酸リチウム(LiCoO2)からなる正極活物質と、アセチレンブラックまたはグラファイト等の炭素系導電剤と、ポリビニリデンフルオライド(PVDF)からなる結着剤とを、質量比90:5:5の割合で量り採り、これらをN−メチル−2−ピロリドンからなる有機溶剤等に溶解させた後、混合し、正極活物質スラリーを調製した。
体積平均粒径20μmの人造黒鉛からなる負極活物質と、スチレンブタジエンゴムからなる結着剤と、カルボキシメチルセルロースからなる増粘剤とを、質量比98:1:1の割合で量り採り、これらを適量の水と混合し、負極活物質スラリーを調製した。
上記正極9をアルミニウムから成る正極集電タブ7に、上記負極10をニッケルから成る負極集電タブ8にそれぞれ接続した。集電タブ7・8の幅は3.0mmであり、厚みは0.10mmである。また、それぞれの集電タブ7・8とタブ突出封止部4aとが重なる部分には、変性ポリプロピレン−高融点樹脂−変性ポリプロピレンの3層構造からなるのタブフィルム5・6を設けた。このタブフィルムは、集電タブ7・8とアルミラミネート材を確実に溶着させるため、また、集電タブ7・8とラミネート層の金属層100とが、ラミネートフィルムの断面において接触することを防止するためのものである。この正極9と負極10とオレフィン系樹脂からなる微多孔膜のセパレータ11とを、巻き取り機により捲回し、巻き止めテープ12を取り付け、図3に示す扁平電極体1を作製した。この後、図4に示すように、電極体1の最外周に捲回されている正極9の2つの扁平側辺R部の上下端部を切り取り、セパレータ露出部11aを形成し、扁平電極体1を完成させた。
なお、タブフィルムやセパレータの材質は上記材質に特に限定されるものではないことは勿論である。
エチレンカーボネート(EC)とプロピレンカーボネート(PC)とジエチルカーボネート(DEC)とを体積比1:1:8の割合(1気圧、25℃と換算した場合における)で混合した非水溶媒に、電解質塩としてのLiPF6を1.0M(モル/リットル)の割合で溶解したものを電解液とした。
予めラミネートフィルムを図6に示すようにカップ状(凹形状)に成型して収納空間2を形成し、上記扁平形電極体1を挿入した。この後、フィルムを折り返して底部を形成し、底部と交わる両側辺を、図6に示すように、カップ壁面より1.1mmの部分を、直方体形状の金型を用いて200℃、3.0秒熱溶着し、サイド封止部4b・4cを形成した。ここで、封止部4b・4cの厚みは、0.14mm(±0.015mm)となるようにした。この後、タブ7・8が突出した開口部から上記電解液を注入した。この後、開口部を封止してタブ突出封止部4aを形成し、本実施の形態にかかるリチウムイオン二次電池を完成させた。
なお、タブ突出封止部4aの形成の際、集電タブ7・8と、外装体の金属層とが短絡しないように、集電タブとラミネートフィルムが溶着される位置に、幅5.5mm、深さ0.06mmの凹部を設けた金型を用い、200℃、5.0秒熱溶着した。よって、封止部4aの厚みは、タブが存在しない部分は0.140mm(±0.015mm)であり、タブが存在する部分は0.250mm(±0.015mm)と、タブが存在しない部分よりも厚くなった。
本実施例は、上記実施の形態と同様にして作製した。
図7に示すように、扁平電極体1の最外周に捲回された正極の扁平側辺R部に切り欠きを設けなかった(セパレータ露出部を形成しなかった)こと以外は、上記実施例1と同様にして、比較例1に係る電池を作製した。
上記実施例1および比較例1にかかる電池を100個用意し、集電タブと外装体の金属層との導通を、テスターによって検出し、導通が確認されたものをショート発生としてカウントした。
なお、上記実施例では、長方形状のセパレータ露出部11aを形成したが、本発明はこの形状に限定されないことは勿論のことであり、半円形状、半楕円形状、多角形状等であってもよい。また、本発明は、3方封止構造の電池ではなく、特許文献1のような4方封止構造の電池にも適用できる。

Claims (2)
- セパレータを介して対向した第1電極と第2電極とが、2つの扁平側面R部を有する扁平形に捲回されてなる扁平電極体を、金属層と樹脂層とが積層されたフィルムからなる外装体内に収納した電池であって、
前記第1電極は前記扁平電極体の最外周に捲回されており、
前記扁平電極体の最外周に位置する前記第1電極の2つの扁平側辺R部の上端及び下端全てにおいて、前記第1電極の一部が切り欠かれ、その1周内側に捲回されているセパレータが露出したセパレータ露出部が形成されている、
ことを特徴とするフィルム状外装体を備えた電池。 - 前記セパレータ露出部の幅aが1.0mm以上且つ前記電極体厚みL1の100%以下であり、前記セパレータ露出部の高さbが1.0mm以上且つ前記第1電極幅L2の20%以下である、
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載のフィルム状外装体を備えた電池。
