Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the toughness of a free cutting steel by using a Ca-contg. substance and adding Al under regulation, in refining of the steel, to restrict the S, O, P and Ca contents and form a spherical (Ca, Al)O phase or the like around which Ca(Mn)S is present.
CONSTITUTION: A free cutting steel consisting of C; 0.01W0.80%, Si; 0.01W 0.40%, Mn; 0.02W2.0%, Cr≤5%, Ca; S%x1/5%W0.015%, Al; 0.001W0.050% and the balance iron, and further contg. P; 0.005W0.020%, 0≤0.01% and S≤ 0.01% as impurities and a spherical (Ca, Al)O and/or (Ca, Al, Si)O phase around which Ca(Mn)S is present as a residual inclusion. This steel does not contain A- type sulfide, A-type silicate and C-type alumina as inclusions. By this compsn. the impact value and limit compressibility in the longitudinal direction are enhanced.
