This printed board side connector has a number of male contacts arranged in a row corresponding to the number of wires to be connected, whereas the external cable side connector has female contacts corresponding to each male contact on the printed board side. and each female contact connects with each wire end of the external cable within the connector. This external cable side connector consists of a connector body and a cover having a large number of female contacts, and the exposed end of the coated wire of the external cable is joined to the tip of each female contact (on the opposite side of the connecting end with the male contact). The cover is joined from above to hold the coated wire between the connector body and the cover. The work of stripping the ends of the coated wires of such external cables or the work of joining each wire to a contact is extremely troublesome and requires a lot of effort in manufacturing the connector.

First, as shown in Figure A, the lever 9 is operated so that the first comb tooth base 6 is separated from the connector main body holding part 8, and the connector main body 17 is mounted with its contacts 16 facing upward. At this time, the pressure welding head 4 is placed in a position away from above the connector main body holding portion 8 (the fourth position).
(position shown in the figure). Next, when the lever 9 is tilted in the opposite direction as shown in FIG. 1st
The comb teeth 6a at the tip of the comb tooth base 6 rise along the inclined surface 30 formed on the bottom surface of the second comb tooth base 7 and reach the connector main body 17. At this time, the front side surface of the comb teeth 6a is located at a distance from the end of the top surface of the connector main body 17, and therefore, the length of the connector main body 17 is covered by the comb teeth 6a along the edge of the top surface.
This length corresponds to the width of the protective wall 19 of the cover 18 (see FIG. 2). Next, as shown in figure c, both comb teeth 6
A large number of coated wires 20 of the cable 21 are stretched in parallel between a and 7a. The pressure contact head 4 is placed above the connector body 17. A hole 31 is formed in this pressure contact head 4 in correspondence with each contact 16 of the connector body 17. Next, as shown in FIG.
The covered wires 20 are cut by the side surfaces of the comb teeth 6a and the covered wires 20 are pressed onto the contacts 16 arranged in a staggered manner, and the contacts 16 and the internal wires 20a are electrically connected as shown in FIG. Connect to. Next, as shown in Fig. e, the comb teeth 6a are separated from the connector body 17 by operating the lever 9. At this time, the end face of the covered wire 20 is at a position longer than the end of the connector body 17.
Next, the cover 18 is placed over the connector 17 as shown in Fig. f. Next, as shown in Fig. g, the pressure contact head 4 is placed above the cover 18 and pushed down as shown by the arrow C to connect the cover 18 and the connector body 17 together. After the wire connection is completed by sandwiching the covered wire 20 between the cover 18 and the connector body 17 in this manner, the pressure welding head 4 is released again and the completed body is removed. Note that when the covered wire 20 is stretched in step c, the height of the wire support portion of the comb teeth 7a is equal to the height of the wire contact portion at the top of the contact 16 and the connector body 17.
The height should preferably be midway between the height of the top surface of. With this configuration, the amount of slack in the covered wire 20 is reduced during the tensioning and cutting process of the covered wire 20, and the amount of slack in the covered wire 20 is reduced after the pressure welding.
Since the tension applied to the wire is also small, the possibility of the wire breaking is reduced.

Especially in the case of a closed-end connector like the one in the above embodiment, cutting and pressure welding can be done simultaneously so that the cut end of the wire is located on the inner surface of the protective wall of the cover, eliminating the need for positioning work after cutting the wire. Connector assembly work becomes more efficient.

A cover 18', an external view of the through-end type connector shown in FIG. 7, is not provided with a protective wall. First a
As shown in the figure, the comb teeth 6a are placed at a position away from the connector body holding portion 8, and the connector body 17 is set. Next, as shown in Figure b, a covered wire 20 is stretched between the comb teeth 6a and 7a. At this time, both comb teeth 6a,
The dimensions of each part of the wire holding part 7a are determined so that the height is intermediate between the height of the top wire contact part of the contact 16 of the connector body 17 and the height of the top surface of the connector body 17. Next, pressure welding head 4
are placed above the connector main body 17 and pressed down as shown in Fig. c to bring the covered wires 20 into pressure contact with the connector main body 17 so that each covered wire 20 is connected to the corresponding contact 16.
electrically connected as shown in Fig. 3. At this time, the coated wire 20 is pushed down from the upwardly convex state as shown in Fig. b to the downwardly convex state in a substantially symmetrical manner, and since the tension applied to the wire is small, there is little possibility that the wire 20 will break. Next, the cover 18' is placed on the connector body 17 as shown in figure d, and then the cover 18' is attached to the connector body 17 using the pressure welding head 4 as shown in figure e.
