A typical example of a semiconductor light emitting device for an optical fiber communication device is a so-called ballad type LED proposed by Bell Laboratories in the United States. On the other hand, as a communication device, a light emitting output monitoring device is required to monitor the light emitting output generated by the light emitting device. For this reason, conventionally, a part of the light emitting output is output using a means such as a half mirror. The method used was to guide the light to a monitoring light-receiving element. However, such a method complicates the communication device and is therefore economically disadvantageous.

FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of the present invention, in which a light-receiving diode 2, such as a photo-PIN diode, is arranged diagonally opposite a light-emitting diode 1 as a light-receiving element. The light receiving diode 2 is mounted on a metallized surface 114 on an electrical insulating plate 110 made of, for example, alumina, which is mechanically fixed to extraction electrode terminals 106 and 107 fixed to a metal stem 9 via an insulator 8. The main axis 15 of the light emitting diode 1 is shifted from the main axis 14 of the light emitting diode 1. Most of the light output 10 is

On the other hand, a portion 11 of the optical output 10 is transmitted through the light receiving diode 2.
, and a photoelectric current corresponding to the light output of the light emitting diode is taken out from the extraction electrode terminals 106 and 107.

According to this embodiment, the light output can be monitored by arranging the light emitting element and the light receiving element diagonally facing each other, and at the same time, by providing the convex lens 112, the container containing the semiconductor element can be easily hermetically sealed. It has the characteristic of being wet. The convex lens 112 may be directly sealed with the metal container 4 or may be sealed with a sealing material.

In summary, according to the present invention, by arranging the light emitting element and the light receiving element so that their principal axes are shifted from each other, an economical semiconductor light emitting device can be obtained in which the light emission output can be easily monitored.

1. In a semiconductor light emitting device that transmits an optical signal generated by a light emitting diode to an optical fiber cable placed outside a container housing the light emitting diode, the main axis position of the light receiving element is different from the main axis of the light emitting diode. The light-receiving element is arranged in the container so that the light-receiving element and the light-emitting diode face each other so that a part of the light signal directly irradiates the light-receiving element, and the light signal from the light-emitting diode passes through the container. A semiconductor light emitting device characterized in that a convex lens is arranged in a through hole of the semiconductor light emitting device and the through hole is hermetically sealed.
