DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a projection welding method for welding a male thread to a thin plate work such as a dash panel that is a part of an automobile body.

Conventionally, when welding male threads to this type of workpiece,
A projection bolt with three protrusions on the underside of the head is used as a male screw, and this bolt is inserted into a hole previously formed in the workpiece, and the bolt is pressurized with the upper and lower electrodes, and then energized. , the protrusion was welded to the workpiece. (For example, see Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 53-133547.) However, according to this welding method, the male thread is used only for welding, making it expensive. Moreover, it is necessary to prevent water from entering the vehicle interior during post-processing. However, there was a drawback that sealer had to be applied around the bolt head.

This invention was made by focusing on the above-mentioned drawbacks, and instead of using a male screw exclusively for welding, a countersunk screw with a cross groove in the head is used, and the tapered surface of the countersunk screw is inserted into a hole previously formed in the workpiece. In order to ensure ring projection welding by contacting and welding at right angles to the surface of the workpiece, the threaded part of the countersunk screw is fitted into the hole of the lower electrode with an electrically insulating guide tube that prevents it from tilting. This guides the welding process as follows.

FIG. 1 shows the set state before welding, and in this figure, 1 and 2 are an upper electrode and a lower electrode, and both electrodes are arranged concentrically facing a base (not shown).
The upper electrode 1 can move forward and backward by a predetermined stroke with respect to the lower electrode 2, and the screw member is pressurized and energized. Reference numeral 3 denotes a guide tube inserted into the hole 2a of the lower electrode 2, which is made of stainless steel and has an electrically insulating coating formed on its inner and outer surfaces.

A countersunk screw 5 having a cross groove 6 is inserted into the hole 4a, and the tapered surface 5b of the head 5a of the countersunk screw 5 is brought into line contact with the edge of the hole 4a, and the threaded portion 5c is inserted into the hole 3a of the guide tube 3. It is located in The inner diameter of the guide tube 3 is made to be slightly larger than the diameter of the threaded portion 5c of the countersunk screw 5 to be welded to the workpiece 4.

Welding is performed with the parts set in this manner. First, the upper electrode 1 is pressurized, and current is applied between the electrodes 1 and 2 in parallel with this operation. During this pressurized energization, the head 5a of the countersunk screw 5 is almost uniformly removed by its cross groove 6, so the entire head 5a is heated and softened and crushed onto the surface of the workpiece 4, and the workpiece 4 is chipped. The ring-shaped line contact portion with 4a is locally melted and reliably welded to the workpiece 4 (see Fig. 2). At this time, since the inclination of the threaded portion 5c of the countersunk screw 5 is regulated by the guide tube 3, it is accurately set upright relative to the workpiece 4.

In FIG. 2, reference numeral 6' indicates a depression left when the cross groove 6 is softened and pressurized.

As is clear from the above description, according to the present invention, by using a countersunk screw having a cross groove, the entire circumference can be reliably welded to the hole of the workpiece, and there is no need to apply sealer in the subsequent process. The guide tube prevents the threaded portion from tilting with respect to the workpiece, thereby eliminating any trouble in attaching parts, and allowing projection welding to be performed at low cost.

In the above embodiment, a countersunk screw was used as the screw member, but a round countersunk screw with a cross groove may also be used. Furthermore, the guide tube is not limited to one whose surface is electrically insulated, and may itself be made of an electrically insulating material.
