Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively and economically use inert gas used in a mold cooling process, by cooling glass lens and mold by the inert gas in oxidation temperature area and changing cooling by the inert gas to cooling by air when the mold temperature attains oxidation initiation temperature of below. CONSTITUTION:Molds 14 and 15 in a molding chamber 4 in the press apparatus 100 of a glass lens are cooled by the following procedure: In press molding process of raw material glass W, relatively small amount of inert gas (N2 gas) is fed from an inert gas inlets 6 and 8. In early period of mold cooling process after molding, i.e. in the first cooling range B1 till temperature of molds 14 and 15 attain oxidation temperature T or below, large amount of inert gasses are fed. When the mold temperature attain the above-mentioned temperature T or below, the first feed source 201 is changed to the second feed source 202 by operation of a changeover valve 200 by a temperature detector 20 and the second cooling range B2 from the temperature T or below which is free from fear of oxidation of molds 14 and 15 is cooled by air. As a result, cooling of glass lens and mold, etc., can be economically carried out in used amount of inert gas of 1/2 compared with a conventional used amount.
