From 中期英語 newte, newete, from rebracketing of 中期英語 an ewte as a newte (for similar misdivisions compare adder, nickname, apron, umpire, etc.). 中期英語 evete, eute, euete, ewte (“newt”), derives from 古期英語 efete (“lizard; newt”). Doublet of eft.
