From arthro- (“joint”) + gryposis (“hooking, abnormal curvature”), from Late Latin grȳpōsis (“hooking”) (from grȳpus (“hook-nosed”)), from Ancient Greek γρυπῶσις (grupôsis, “hooking”), from γρύπεσθαι (grúpesthai, “become hooked”), from γρύπος (grúpos, “hook-nosed”).
