〔動〕[しばしば複合語で] ハツカネズミ, マウス(Mus musculus)《◆(1)ネズミ科(Muridae), キヌゲネズミ亜科(Cricetinae)の齧歯(げっし)動物の総称;rat より小形のものをいう. 欧米の家ネズミは mouse が多いが日本の家ネズミは rat のことが多い. (2)貧困・乱雑を象徴. (3)鳴き声は squeak. (4)トビハツカネズミ(jumping mouse)など種々の齧歯(げっし)類の総称としても用いる》.

From 中期英語 mous, from 古期英語 mūs, from Proto-West Germanic *mūs, from Proto-Germanic *mūs, from Proto-Indo-European *múHs.
The computing sense was coined by American engineer Bill English in 1965 and first used publicly in a publication titled "Computer-Aided Display Control", in reference to the similarity with the animal.
