The term may derive from a root present or, alternatively, a ye-present *(s)néh₁yeti, which may also be attested in Proto-Celtic *sniyeti. It is impossible to determine which of these forms is reflected in the Latin term. If the Latin word derived from the ye-present, the Proto-Italic term would have passed through an intermediate phase in *nējō.
