Unknown (Watkins, 1969); probably from an ancient, extinct Mediterranean substrate language. Cognate with Ancient Greek ῥάξ (rháx, “grape”) (root: ῥαγ-, Pre-Greek), Albanian rrush (“resin”), and Persian رز (raz, “vine”), which were presumably borrowed from the same source.
