名詞
typesetters' quotation (uncountable)
- A system of quotation wherein terminal punctuation marks are enclosed within a quotation (かつ within most other uses of quotation marks) even if not part of the original material being quoted.
-
2015 September 19, David A. Wheeler, Secure Programming HOWTO – Creating Secure Software[1], retrieved 2015-09-23:
- "This book uses the logical quotation system, not the misleading typesetters' quotation system. This means that quoted information does not include any trailing punctuation if the punctuation is not part of the material being quoted. The typesetters' quotation system causes extraneous characters to be placed inside the quotes; this has no effect in poetry but is a serious problem when accuracy is important. The typesetters' quotation system often falsifies quotes (since it includes punctuation not in the quote) and can be disastrously erroneous in code or computer commands.

使用する際の注意点
- Various exceptions may be made by publishers that normally adhere to typesetters' quotation, e.g. to prefer logical quotation style for computer source code and commands, glosses in linguistics, the names of cultivars in botany, terms of art in philosophy, etc.; and any variant of British quotation (sense 1) for textual criticism.
- The term American quotation, and alternative forms thereof, are considerably more common, but are ambiguous, as the phrase can also refer to the preference for double before single quotation marks, or (most often) the combination of that preference with typesetters' quotation into a single style, that preferred by most American book, journalism, and fiction publishers.
