From Middle English *even-night, from 古期英語 efnniht, from Proto-Germanic *ebnanahts (“equinox”), equivalent to even- +‎ night. Cognate with Old Frisian evennacht, ivinnacht, Old Norse jafnnætti. Compare also Dutch nachtevening (“equinox”).
