Abstract
There is provided an aerosolisable formulation comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation; (ii) nicotine; (iii) one or more acids; and (iv) one or more cyclodextrins, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1.
Claims (27)
1. An aerosolisable formulation comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation; 5 (ii) nicotine; (iii) one or more acids; and (iv) one or more cyclodextrins, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1. 10
2. An aerosolisable formulation according to claim 1 wherein water is present in an amount of at least 75 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation.
3. An aerosolisable formulation according to claim 1 or 2 wherein water is present in an amount of at least 90 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation.
4. 4 An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the nicotine is present in an amount of no greater than 1 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation. 20
5. An aerosolisable formulation according to claim 4 wherein nicotine is present in an amount of from 0.01 to 0.6wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation.
6. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the wherein at least 5 wt% of the nicotine present in the formulation is in protonated form.
7. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the wherein at least 50 wt% of the nicotine present in the formulation is in protonated form.
8. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the 30 wherein at least 90 wt% of the nicotine present in the formulation is in protonated form.

An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, lactic acid, formic acid, citric acid, benzoic acid, pyruvic acid, levulinic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, sorbic acid, propionic acid, 35 phenylacetic acid, and mixtures thereof.
10. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, benzoic acid, levulinic acid, lactic acid, sorbic acid, and mixtures thereof.
11. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the acid 5 is at least citric acid.
12. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 11 further comprising one or more flavours. 10
13. An aerosolisable formulation according to claim 12 wherein the one or more flavours are selected from the group consisting of (4-(para-)methoxyphenyl)butanone, vanillin, ?- undecalactone, menthone, 5-propenyl guaethol, menthol, para-menthathiolone and mixtures thereof. 15
14. An aerosolisable formulation according to claim 13 wherein the flavour is at least menthol.
15. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 12 to 14 wherein the one or more flavours are present in a total amount of no greater than 2wt.% based on the 20 aerosolisable formulation.
16. An aerosolisable formulation according to any one of claims 12 to 15 wherein the one or more flavours are present in a total amount of from 0.01 to 1wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation.
17. A process for forming an aerosol, the process comprising aerosolising an aerosolisable formulation comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation; (ii) nicotine; 30 (iii) one or more acids; and (iv) one or more cyclodextrins, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1.
18. A process according to claim 17 wherein the aerosolisable formulation is an 35 aerosolisable formulation as defined in any one of claims 2 to 16.
19. A process according to claim 17 or 18 wherein the aerosol is formed by a process performed at a temperature below 50°C.
20. A process according to claim 17, 18 or 19 wherein the aerosol is formed by applying ultrasonic energy to the aerosolisable formulation.
21. A contained aerosolisable formulation comprising (a) a container; and (b) an aerosolisable formulation , comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation; 10 (ii) nicotine; (iii) one or more acids; and (iv) one or more cyclodextrins, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1. 15
22. A contained aerosolisable formulation according to claim 21 wherein the aerosolisable formulation is an aerosolisable formulation as defined in any one of claims 2 to
23. A contained aerosolisable formulation according to claim 21 or 22 wherein the 20 container is configured for engagement with an electronic aerosol provision system.
24. An electronic aerosol provision system comprising: (a) an aerosoliser for aerosolising formulation for inhalation by a user of the electronic aerosol provision system; 25 (b) a power supply comprising a cell or battery for supplying power to the aerosoliser (c) an aerosolisable formulation , comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation; (ii) nicotine; (iii) one or more acids; and 30 (iv) one or more cyclodextrins, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1.
25. An electronic aerosol provision system according to claim 24 wherein the aerosolisable formulation is an aerosolisable formulation as defined in any one of claims 2 to 35 16.
26. A process for improving the sensory properties of an aerosolised nicotine formulation, the process comprising the steps of (a) providing an aerosolisable material comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable material, (ii) nicotine and (iii) one or more cyclodextrins; (b) incorporating into the aerosolisable material one or more acids, wherein the molar ratio of 5 acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1.
27. Use of one or more acids for improving sensory properties of an aerosolised nicotine formulation, wherein the nicotine formulation comprises (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolisable formulation; 10 (ii) nicotine; (iii) one or more acids; and (iv) one or more cyclodextrins, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 5:1 to 1:1. -1 -0.5 0 0.5 1.0 1.5 log [conc]
