Abstract
There is provided an aerosolised formulation comprising a vapour phase and a liquid water droplet phase, wherein the aerosolised formulation comprises (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation; (ii) one or more flavours; (iii) nicotine; (iv) 2-hydroxy-propyl derivatives of cyclodextrins and mixtures thereof; and (v) one or more acids; wherein at least 50 wt.% of the one or more flavours is present in the vapour phase, wherein an aerosol of the aerosolised formulation has a D10 of at least 0.5 µm.
Claims (26)
1. An aerosolised formulation comprising a vapour phase and a liquid water droplet phase, wherein the aerosolised formulation comprises 5 (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation; (ii) one or more flavours; (iii) nicotine; (iv) 2-hydroxy-propyl derivatives of cyclodextrins and mixtures thereof; and (v) one or more acids; 10 wherein at least 50 wt.% of the one or more flavours is present in the vapour phase, wherein an aerosol of the aerosolised formulation has a D10 of at least 0.5 µm.
2. An aerosolised formulation according to claim 1 wherein water is present in an amount of at least 75 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation.
3. An aerosolised formulation according to claim 1 or 2 wherein water is present in an amount of at least 90 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation.
4. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the one or 20 more flavours are selected from the group consisting of (4-(para-)methoxyphenyl) butanone, vanillin, ?-undecalactone, menthone, 5-propenyl guaethol, menthol, para-mentha- 8-thiolone and mixtures thereof.
5. An aerosolised formulation according to claim 4 wherein the flavour is at least 25 menthol.
6. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the one or more flavours are present in a total amount of no greater than 2wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation.
7. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the one or more flavours are present in a total amount of from 0.01 to 1wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation. 35
8. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein at least 70 wt.% of the at least one flavour is present in the vapour phase.
9. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein at least 90 wt.% of the at least one flavour is present in the vapour phase.
10. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein at least 50 5 wt.% of the nicotine is present in the liquid water droplet phase.
11. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein at least 70 wt.% of the nicotine is present in the liquid water droplet phase 10
12. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 11 wherein encapsulating material is present in a total amount of at least 1 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation.
13. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein 15 encapsulating material is present in a total amount of no greater than 12 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation.
14. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the nicotine is present in an amount of no greater than 1wt.% based on the aerosolised 20 formulation.
15. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 14 wherein the nicotine is present in an amount of from 0.01 to 0.6wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation.

An aerosolised formulation according to claim 1 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, lactic acid, formic acid, citric acid, benzoic acid, pyruvic acid, levulinic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, sorbic acid, propionic acid, phenylacetic acid, and mixtures thereof.
17. An aerosolised formulation according to claim 16 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, benzoic acid, levulinic acid, sorbic acid, lactic acid, and mixtures thereof. 35
18. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 16 or 17 wherein the acid is at least citric acid.
19. An aerosolised formulation according to any one of claims 1 to 18 wherein the aerosolisable formulation contains no flavours that can be encapsulated by the one or more cyclodextrins. 5

A process for forming an aerosol, the process comprising aerosolising an aerosolisable formulation comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation; (ii) one or more flavours; (iii) nicotine; 10 (iv) 2-hydroxy-propyl derivatives of cyclodextrins and mixtures thereof; and (v) one or more acids; to provide an aerosol comprising a vapour phase and a liquid water droplet phase, wherein at least 50 wt.% of the one or more flavours is present in the vapour phase, wherein the aerosol has a D10 of at least 0.5 µm.
21. A process according to claim 20 wherein the aerosolisable formulation is a formulation as defined in any one of claims 2 to 19.
22. A process according to claim 20 or 21 wherein the aerosol is formed by a process 20 performed at a temperature below 50°C.
23. A process according to claim 20, 21 or 22 wherein the aerosol is formed by applying ultrasonic energy to the aerosolised formulation. 25

An electronic aerosol provision system comprising: (a) an aerosoliser for aerosolising formulation for inhalation by a user of the electronic aerosol provision system; (b) a power supply comprising a cell or battery for supplying power to the aerosoliser (c) aerosolisable formulation comprising 30 (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation; (ii) one or more flavours; (iii) nicotine; (iv) 2-hydroxy-propyl derivatives of cyclodextrins and mixtures thereof; and (v) one or more acids; 35 wherein the aerosoliser provides an aerosol comprising a vapour phase and a liquid water droplet phase, wherein at least 50 wt.% of the one or more flavours is present in the vapour phase, wherein the aerosol has a D10 of at least 0.5 µm.
25. An electronic aerosol provision system according to claim 24 wherein the aerosolised formulation is an aerosolised formulation as defined in any one of claims 2 to 19. 5

A process for improving delivery of flavour to an aerosolised formulation, the process comprising the steps of (a) providing an aerosolisable composition comprising (i) water in an amount of at least 50 wt.% based on the aerosolised formulation; (ii) one or more flavours; 10 (iii) nicotine; (iv) 2-hydroxy-propyl derivatives of cyclodextrin and mixtures thereof; and (v) one or more acids; (b) aerosolising the aerosolisable composition to provide an aerosol comprising a vapour phase and a liquid water droplet phase, wherein at least 50 wt.% of the one or more flavours 15 is present in the vapour phase, wherein the aerosol has a D10 of at least 0.5 µm. -1 -0.5 0 0.5 1.0 1.5 log [conc]
