語源

Borrowed from Arabic ضَمَّة (ḍamma, “a joining”), instance noun of the verb ضَمَّ (ḍamma, “to join”). Refers to the joining of the lips together when making an /u/ sound.

damma (plural dammas or damma)

1. (linguistics) In the Arabic script, the vowel point for u, appearing as a small curl placed above a letter ( ـُ ) and designating a short u /u/. If the Arabic letter و (wāw) immediately follows, it indicates a long ū /uː/.
2. In Iranian Persian ـُ represents the vowel /o/. If the letter ـو immediately follows it represents the diphthong /ow/. This usage differs from other Arabic script languages and from classical Persian, in which the diphthong /ow/ did not occur.

     Mopso Nisa datur! Quid non speremus amantes?
     Iungentur iam gryphes equis, aevoque sequenti
     Cum canibus timidi venient ad pocula dammae.

     Nosa has been given to Mopsus! What, should lovers even hope? Gryphons are now to the cart yoked together with horses, and, new times comming, bashful fallow deer will with dogs now quench its thirst.

   • 8 CE, Ovid, Fasti 3.645–648:

     […] ,
     cumque metu rapitur, tunica velata recincta
     currit, ut auditis territa damma lupis,
     corniger hanc tumidis rapuisse Numicius undis
     creditur et stagnis occuluisse suis.

     […] , as she was taken by fear and in her loose shirt fled, like the fallow deer startled by the howling of wolves, they say horned Numicius had her stolen to the rising waves and in his waters hidden.
