Borrowed from Latin alveus (“hollow trough-shaped vessel, trough, bath tub, hull, hold, ship, boat, channel or bed (of a river or trench), beehive”). First attested in the late 17th century in an earlier sense.

- (rare, now usually law) The bed or channel of a river, especially when the river is flowing in its natural or ordinary course; (also) the trough of the sea.
- (neuroanatomy) A thin layer of medullary nerve fibers on the ventricular surface of the hippocampus.
