2008/12/02 グーグルが中心となって開発を進めるオープンソースのWebブラウザ、「Chromium」でエクステンション（機能拡張のためのプラグイン）のためのAPI実装と、その配布プラットフォームの検討が開始されたようだ。同社でChromeとGearsの開発に取り組んでいるアーロン・ブードマン（Arron Boodman）氏が11月29日付けのブログで明らかにした。Firefoxユーザーが使い慣れたような各種エクステンションと同じようなものをChromeでも開発・提供可能にしていくという。 ChromiumとChromeは厳密には異なる。Chromeは、Chromiumをベースにグーグルが独自にビルドしたWebブラウザで、ChromiumはオープンソースのWebブラウザ。ただ、両者は実質的に同等で、エクステンションについても、まったく同じものが動作することが設計の要件に盛り込まれてい
