• The correctness of the use of this word with the sense “uninterested” is disputed. Some reference works consider it acceptable, while others do not. According to the Macmillan Dictionary “[m]any people think that this use of the word is not correct”. On the other hand, while the Oxford English Dictionary specifies that this sense is “[o]ften regarded as a loose use”, evidence shows that it dates to the 17th century. Moreover, the former Lexico website which used Oxford University Press dictionary content noted that “around a quarter of citations in the Oxford English Corpus for disinterested are for this sense”.
