大文字は「A」、小文字は「a」。ギリシャ文字のΑ（アルファ）に由来する。
読み方は一般的には「エー」または「エイ(イをハッキリに)」と読まれる。なお英語に限ってだが、「エイ」に相当する /ei/ という発音はあるが「エー」に相当する /eː/ という発音は英語には無い。
単体使用の場合が多く、言葉の略称として使用されることもある。
